Smartphone maker Xiaomi to partner Flipkart for India debut following Motorola

EW DELHI: Following the footsteps of Motorola, Chinese handset maker Xiaomi is also teaming up with e-Commerce major Flipkart to launch its handsets in India.
Touted as the 'Apple' of China, Xiaomi had launched its official website in India earlier this month, announcing its entry into the fiercely competitive Indian smartphone market in the next few weeks.
According to sources, Xiaomi is expected to bring two smartphones in partnership with Flipkart in the next 2-3 months.
They added the agreement between the parties is in the final stages and the launch on the online market place will happen next month.
While Flipkart declined to comment, response could not be ascertained from Xiaomi. Many handset makers like Motorola and Alcatel are partnering with e-commerce firms to launch their devices exclusively.
While Motorola has launched its Moto G, Moto X and Moto E with Flipkart, Celkon had launched its Android Kitkat-powered Campus A35K exclusively with Snapdeal. Founded in 2010 by serial entrepreneur Lei Jun, the Beijing-headquartered firm has become one of China's biggest electronics companies that designs, develops and sells smartphones, mobile apps and other such consumer items.
Other Chinese firms selling its handsets in India include Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, Gionee and Oppo, the latest entrant. According to the company's website, it has already sold over 17 million handsets in China. Its portfolio includes devices like Mi 3, Redmi (Singapore dollar 169), Mi Wi-Fi and Mi Box, among others. It launched its products in Singapore in February this year.

Earlier this month, the company had also roped in Jabong co-founder Manu Kumar Jain to head its operations in India. Indian smartphone market is witnessing strong competition between local and international players, all vying to grab a share of the multi-billion dollar market.

According to research firm IDC, smartphone sales in the country grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn. In the first quarter of 2014, 17.59 million smartphones were shipped into India as compared with 6.14 million in the same period of 2013. Samsung was the market leader in the category with 35% market share in Q1, followed by Micromax (15%), Karbonn (10%), LAVA (6%) and Nokia (4%). Affordable smartphones, especially those priced in the sub-USD 200 category (Rs 12,000), are doing well. Over the last few weeks, companies have launched handsets like Lumia 630 and Moto G to tap the booming market.

Xiaomi launches Nexus 5 rival Mi 3 at Rs 14,999

NEW DELHI: Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has launched its Mi 3 smartphone, a rival to the likes of Nexus 5, in the Indian market at Rs 14,500. The smartphone, currently listed on the company's India website only, will be available for sale on July 15.

The all-new Mi 3 has a 5-inch Full HD display and runs on a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB RAM. It is powered by Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) with Xiaomi's proprietary MIUI skin on top. It packs 16GB internal storage, but does not support storage expansion via microSD cards.

Xiaomi Mi 3 sports a 13MP camera with dual-LED flash on the back and a 2MP camera in front. Connectivity suite of the smartphone consists of 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 and NFC. It has a 3,050mAh battery, and Xiaomi claims that the smartphone can deliver talk time of up to 21 hours on 3G networks.

Made of aluminium-magnesium alloy, this smartphone weighs 145gram and is 8.1mm thick.

The smartphone will come with Xiaomi's Mi Cloud service, which will allow users to save and access their contacts, messages, photos, notes and call logs online. They will also be able to back up apps in the cloud and locate the handset online in case it is lost.

Along with the smartphone, Xiaomi has listed two power banks with 10,400mAh and 5,200mAh battery capacities on its website. However, it has not revealed the prices of the two products.

According to an earlier report, Xiaomi products will be sold exclusively via Flipkart in the country.

Xiaomi is the latest Chinese manufacturer to enter the Indian market, joining the ranks of Oppo and Gionee. However, Xiaomi's pricing is much more aggressive than the other two Chinese brands in India.

In the first quarter of 2014, Xiaomi was the third-biggest smartphone manufacturer in China, ahead of Apple, Sony, Huawei etc. Unlike most smartphone makers, the company earns profits via web-based services and sells its products online via its website. It does not have retail outlets and does minimal advertising.

In August 2013, Google executive Hugo Barra quit his job as the vice president of product management for Android to join Xiaomi as its global vice president. Last month Barra announced that Xiaomi has roped in Jabong co-founder Manu Kumar Jain to head its India operations.
